




Mr. Deloss L. Hunt, age 64 of Barnetts Campground Lane, Gordonsville, died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Hunt was born August 23, 1944 in Lake Charles, Louisana, the son of the late Billie Mae Lewallen and Dewitt Edison Hunt. A brother, Jimmy Boyles, preceded him in death. He was a truck driver and a farmer. He was a veteran, serving in the Vietnam Conflcit, and continued as a member of the National Guard at Carthage. Mr. Hunt is survived by his wife, Linda Williams Hunt of New Middleton; daughters, Georgia (Ken) Bagley of New Middleton and Angelia (Gary) Carey of Defeated; son, T. J. (Lisa) Hunt of New Middleton; sister, Iris Lindsay of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandchildren, Kenny Bagley, Shane Bagley, Michael Bagley, Douglas Hunt, Lynnette Hunt, Nikki McQuiston, Dane Gerrald and Katherine Carey; a much beloved dog, Rosie. Mrs. Shirley Grigg, age 72 of the Kempville community, was pronounced dead on arrival at 6:57 a.m. Tuesday morning, December 23, 2008, at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage. She became gravely ill at her Grigg Lane home earlier Tuesday morning, suffering from congestive heart failure. Mrs. Grigg is at the Hackett Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where the family was to make arrangements at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, December 23rd. Due to the noon December 23rd deadline for the January 1st edition, complete arrangements will appear in the January 8th edition of the Courier. Mrs. Grigg was the wife of the late Billy Frank Grigg who died in 2000 and the mother of the late Bruce Grigg, who died in 2006. Mr. Eugene Carter, age 87, of Carthage, a former South Carthage City Councilman, and Evie Kinslow Carter, his wife of thirty-one years, perished in a house fire at their 93 Lebanon Highway home. The fire was reported to Smith County E-911 at 2:14 a.m. Thursday morning, December 18th. Dr. Adele Lewis, with the Metro Medical Examiners Office, ruled Mr. Carter’s death was due to smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. Joint 11:00 a.m. funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning, December 23rd, from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson funeral Home. Eld. Michael Hill officiated and burial followed in the Granville Cemetery. Born May 25, 1921 in the Granville community of Jackson County, he was one of four sons of the late Andy and Lola Hardcastle Carter. Two brothers preceded him in death, Willie Haskell “Bill” Carter and Carl “Smoky” Carter. Mr. Carter served our country with the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He was inducted in Nashville on September 1, 1942, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Seaman First Class at the United States Coast Guard Personnel Separation Center #12 in San Francisco, California, on October 15, 1945. In August of 1977, Mr. Carter was married to Carthage hairstylists, the former Evie Bates Kinslow, a native of the Temperance Hall community. Mr. Carter was a 1942 graduate of Jackson County High School. Before retiring and returning to his native Tennessee, Mr. Carter was employed with the City of Santa Cruz, California as supervisor of equipment operators and was also a member of the California State Civil Service Commission. Mr. Carter was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Mr. Carter was the uncle of well-known Carthage barber Charles Carter. Surviving are his two sons, Kenneth B. Carter and wife, Pat, of Mapleton, Minnesota, Ronald Gene Carter of Santa Cruz, California; step-children, Larry Kinslow and wife, Lana, Phillip Kinslow and wife, Machelle, all of Carthage; brother, L.B. Carter and wife, Syble, of Gordonsville; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. Sanderson of Carthage.
Mrs. Evie Kinslow Carter, age 83, of South Carthage, a longtime and highly respected businesswoman and beautician, and Eugene Carter, her husband of thirty-one years, perished in a house fire at their 93 Lebanon Highway home. She was the daughter of the late Roy Bates and was one of nine children of the late Shellie Lawrence Bates Presley Kelley. Mrs. Carter was born September 29, 1925 in the Temperance Hall community of Dekalb County. Six siblings preceded her in death, a twin sister, Eva Bates, who died at the age of two and one-half years old, another sister, Lorene Martin; four brothers, Hobert Lee Bates, Alton Bates, Clarence Bates and Joseph Presley. In August of 1977 Mrs. Carter was married to Granville community native, Eugene Carter, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II and former South Carthage City Councilman, who was retired as supervisor of equipment operators in Santa Cruz, California. Mrs. Carter, a hairdresser for forty-eight years before retiring in 2006, owned and operated Evie’s Hairstylists in Carthage for many of those years, and her last years she operated the shop out of her home. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church in Rock City. Surviving are two sons, Larry Kinslow and wife, Lana, Phillip Kinslow and wife, Machelle, all of Carthage; step-sons, Kenneth B. Carter and wife, Pat, of Mapelton, Minnesota, Ronald Gene Carter of Santa Cruz, California; two brothers, Don Presley and wife, Joy, of Lebanon, Robert Presley and wife, Eula, of Dibrell; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
